A’s Outlast Appleton, Finish NEWBL Regular Season at 8-8

The Sheboygan A’s finished the Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League regular season with a dramatic 9-6 victory over the Appleton Legends Thursday night at the USA Youth Sports Complex.
After watching an early four-run lead disappear, the A’s scored three times in the top of the ninth to secure the win and finish league play at 8-8. Sheboygan must now await the result of Menasha’s game against Greenville to determine its playoff seed.
Appleton opened the scoring on Bubba Thompson’s solo home run in the second inning, but Sheboygan answered with four runs in the third.
George Hoss and Harry Steldt singled before Jimmy Juergensen loaded the bases with another hit. Hudson Wagner tied the game with an RBI single, Cal Casper followed with a run-scoring single, and Connor Palmquist delivered a two-run single to left to give the A’s a 4-1 lead.
Sheboygan added another run in the fifth. Wagner reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on Casper’s RBI double to right, extending the advantage to 5-1.
Cade Voelker held Appleton to two runs over five innings, allowing four hits while striking out eight and walking three. The Legends scored their second run in the fifth on Nick Terrell’s RBI double, but Voelker stranded runners at the corners to preserve the three-run lead.
Appleton rallied against the Sheboygan bullpen in the seventh. Reid Hietpas singled home one run, Thompson added a sacrifice fly, and Titan Milhaupt tied the game with a two-out RBI single to left.
The A’s immediately reclaimed the lead in the eighth. Lucas Lemons singled, stole second and advanced to third on Hoss’ single before Chase Hanselman lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Lemons for a 6-5 advantage.
Appleton answered again in the bottom half when Hietpas doubled home Anthony Weyers to tie the game at 6-6.
Sheboygan finally took control for good in the ninth. Connor Lasch, Juergensen and Wagner drew consecutive walks to load the bases with nobody out. Lasch scored on a wild pitch, and Juergensen came home on another wild pitch to make it 8-6. After Lemons walked, he stole second while Wagner broke for home and scored on the play, giving the A’s a three-run cushion.
Bryce Lovisa finished the job in the bottom of the ninth. Appleton brought the tying run to the plate after a single and a walk, but Lovisa recorded two strikeouts before inducing a lineout to Lemons at second base to end the game.
Lovisa earned the win after allowing one run over two innings while striking out three. Noah Imrie worked two innings in relief of Voelker.
The A’s finished with 14 hits and seven stolen bases. Hoss led the offense with three hits and two stolen bases. Wagner went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored, an RBI and two steals. Casper and Palmquist each drove in two runs, while Juergensen and Lemons also collected two hits apiece.
Sheboygan now waits for the final NEWBL results to determine its position in the league playoffs.
The A’s take on the Milwaukee Tropics tonight at 7:30 in the final regular season home game of the year at Wildwood Park.
