The Sheboygan A’s broke open a tight game with a four-run fifth inning and rode another strong pitching performance to a 6-2 victory over the Green Bay Blue Ribbons Tuesday night at Wildwood Park.
With the win, the A’s improved to 4-1 in Wisconsin State League play.
Green Bay struck first in the third inning when Quinn Falish connected for a solo home run to left field, giving the Blue Ribbons a 1-0 lead.
The A’s answered in the bottom of the fourth. Harry Steldt doubled to right field and later scored when Riley Palmquist lifted a sacrifice fly, evening the score at 1-1.
Sheboygan seized control in the fifth with a two-out rally. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Cal Casper singled to keep the inning alive before Alex Ames and Lucas Lemons worked walks to load the bases. Steldt was then hit by a pitch to force home the go-ahead run, and Jacob Neese followed with a two-run single to right field, scoring Ames and Lemons. Jimmy Juergensen later drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run and give the A’s a 5-1 advantage.
The Blue Ribbons trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the seventh when Brayden Steinbecker doubled home a run, but starting pitcher Jason Bunton escaped further trouble by recording two strikeouts and a pop out with runners on second and third.
Sheboygan added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. Lemons walked and used a pair of stolen bases to move into scoring position before Juergensen lined an RBI single to center, extending the lead to 6-2.
Juergensen finished with two RBIs, while Neese also drove in two runs. Steldt doubled, scored twice, and collected an RBI. Lemons reached base three times, stole two bases, and scored twice.
On the mound, Bunton delivered another quality start for the A’s. The left-hander worked eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five. He stranded seven Green Bay runners and repeatedly worked out of jams to keep the Blue Ribbons from mounting a comeback.
Jack Poellot closed out the victory with a scoreless ninth inning in his season debut, striking out two.
