A’s Finish 5-Game Non-League Weekend 2-3

The Sheboygan A’s wrapped up a busy five-game weekend Sunday, finish 2-3 as the club continues to prepare for league play.
Friday saw the A’s drop a 10-9 game in Denmark despite missing most lineup regulars. After falling behind 6-0 early, the A’s battled back to make the game close before eventually dropping the contest.
Saturday, the A’s returned home for a four-game weekend set against the Chicago Rockies, formerly known as the Chicago Rippers. In the Saturday opener, game one appeared headed for a tight finish before Chicago broke a 1-1 tie with a seven-run seventh inning to hand the A’s an 8-1 defeat. Gavin Gawronski turned in a strong start, allowing just one run through six innings while striking out five. Jimmy Juergensen drove in Sheboygan’s lone run, but the A’s were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities throughout the game.
The A’s responded in impressive fashion in the nightcap. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Sheboygan erupted for eight runs in the second inning on its way to a 9-2 victory. Juergensen highlighted the rally with a two-run home run, while Harry Steldt finished with three hits and three RBIs. Alex Ames added two runs scored and two RBIs, and Ty Kowalkowski, the former Addison Brave who is retiring but had always wanted to play one game for the A’s, collected a pair of hits. On the mound, veteran right-hander Jason Bunton tossed a complete-game victory, allowing just two runs on five hits without issuing a walk.
Sunday’s first game featured another dominant pitching performance. Jared Reklaitis fired a complete-game two-hit shutout as the A’s blanked Chicago 3-0. Reklaitis struck out six and did not allow a walk while needing only 68 pitches to complete the seven-inning contest. After five scoreless innings, Sheboygan broke through in the sixth when Ames and George Hoss reached base ahead of RBI hits from Steldt, Nick Tenny, and Juergensen.
Chicago claimed the weekend finale 9-3 to earn a split of Sunday’s doubleheader. The Rockies scored four runs in the fourth inning and added five more in the fifth to build a lead the A’s could not overcome. Steldt provided the offensive highlight for Sheboygan with a solo home run, while Ames, Lucas Lemons, and Jacob Neese each contributed hits. Cal Casper delivered a bright spot out of the bullpen, striking out three in a scoreless sixth inning.
Steldt paced the offense throughout the Chicago series, collecting hits in all four games, while Juergensen delivered several key extra-base hits and run-producing at-bats. Ames consistently created opportunities at the top of the lineup, reaching base frequently and using his speed to pressure opposing defenses.
The A’s sit with a 3-3 overall record after their season-opening victory over Two Rivers earlier in the week. The A’s next game takes place Tuesday at home against the Kewaskum A’s in their Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League opener.
