A's Split with Lombard

Krist’s Walk-off Winner Highlights A’s Doubleheader Split with Lombard

Ross Kirst (UW-Platteville) played the role of hero Saturday.

Tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, Krist singled in TJ Roberts as the A’s handed the Lombard Orioles their first Wisconsin State League loss in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader action at Wildwood Park. The Orioles would take game two 9-3 to split the day.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, TJ Roberts hit a double to left-center to get into scoring position. Bennet Becker grounded out to third, but smart base running by Roberts resulted in him standing on third with two outs. Up came A’s lead-off man, Krist. On the first pitch he saw, he hit a ball to the right side of the infield that just escaped the outstretched glove of the Orioles’ second baseman, scoring Roberts for the walk-off winner.

Brad Rindfleisch earned the win. He overcame a first-inning three-run home run to old the Orioles in check, scattering seven hits over his nine innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Game two, the Orioles go off to a quick start, grabbing a 7-0 lead before the A’s offense could get any runs of their own. The A’s would start mounting a comeback with three runs in the sixth before the Orioles closed the door.

The doubleheader split keeps the A’s just over .500 for the season and at an even .500 in the Wisconsin State League at 9-9, good for third place in the standings. These two teams will do it again tomorrow at 1 PM in another doubleheader. Tickets are still available for the contest.
