A’s Sweep Green Bay, Move Back Into First Place in WSL

The Sheboygan A’s picked up two of their biggest wins of the season Tuesday night, sweeping a Wisconsin State League doubleheader from the Green Bay Blue Ribbons at Joannes Stadium.
Sheboygan held on for a 10-9 victory in the opener before Jared Reklaitis delivered a complete-game, 13-strikeout performance in an 8-2 win in Game 2. The sweep moved the A’s back into first place in the WSL.
Chase Hanselman drove in five runs and the A’s answered every Green Bay rally to escape with a one-run victory in the opener.
Alex Ames walked to begin the game before Hanselman launched a two-run home run to right field, giving Sheboygan an immediate 2-0 lead. Green Bay answered with one run in the bottom half, but the A’s broke the game open with four more in the second.
Cal Casper singled and George Hoss walked before Ames reached on an error to load the bases. Hanselman followed with a two-run single, Harry Steldt brought home another run on a groundout, and Connor Lasch added an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-1.
Green Bay began chipping away in the fourth. Zachary Grossman hit a solo home run before Landen Lozier added a three-run homer later in the inning, cutting Sheboygan’s lead to 6-5.
Hanselman gave the A’s another run in the fifth with an RBI double that scored Hoss, but Green Bay tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom half on an RBI double by Easton Engel and an RBI single by Brayden Steinbecker.
Sheboygan immediately regained control in the sixth. Lasch singled and scored on Hudson Wagner’s RBI hit to center. Casper then doubled home Wagner before an error allowed Casper to score, putting the A’s back in front 10-7.
Green Bay made one final push in the seventh when Grossman hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot that cut the lead to one. Jason Bunton responded by striking out the next two hitters before inducing a pop-up to close out the victory.
Hanselman finished 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Lasch and Casper each added two hits, while Wagner drove in a run and scored once.
Bunton earned the win with 2⅔ innings of relief, allowing two runs while striking out four. Eric Schmitz started and worked 4⅓ innings.
Reklaitis took over in the nightcap, striking out 13 while holding Green Bay to two runs over seven innings.
Sheboygan scored first in the second inning after Nick Tenny was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on an error before coming home on a passed ball.
The A’s then scored three times in the third. Ames doubled and scored on Steldt’s RBI double before Lasch’s groundout brought home Hanselman. Tenny followed with an RBI single to score Steldt, giving Sheboygan a 4-0 lead.
Hanselman and Steldt added RBI hits in the fourth, extending the advantage to 6-0. Green Bay scored twice in the bottom of the inning, including a solo home run by Grossman, but Reklaitis prevented any further damage.
Sheboygan added its final two runs in the sixth. Casper singled and scored after Hoss reached on a hit and a Green Bay error. Hoss later came home on Hanselman’s RBI groundout to make it 8-2.
Reklaitis continued to pile up strikeouts from there. He struck out the side in the sixth and finished the complete game by allowing nine hits and one walk while throwing 105 pitches, including 75 strikes.
Steldt led the offense with two doubles and two RBIs. Hanselman also drove in two runs, while Ames and Juergensen each doubled. The A’s played error-free defense in both games of the doubleheader.
The sweep puts Sheboygan’s magic number at two to clinch at least a share of the Wisconsin State League championship. Any combination of A’s wins and Lombard losses totaling two would secure at least a share, while a total of three would give Sheboygan the title outright.
The A’s still have a suspended WSL game against Kenosha scheduled to resume Monday with Sheboygan leading 7-4, along with a rain makeup against West Allis that has not yet been scheduled. Lombard has two games remaining against West Allis and two against Addison.
Sheboygan returns to Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League action Wednesday night at Kewaskum before traveling to Appleton on Thursday. The A’s then close the home portion of their regular-season schedule with a non-league game against the Milwaukee Tropics on Friday at Wildwood Park.
