A’s Shut Out in 1-0 Pitching Duel at Kewaskum

The Sheboygan A’s received a strong performance from their pitching staff Wednesday night but could not break through offensively, falling 1-0 to the Kewaskum A’s in Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League action.
The game remained scoreless through four innings as Colson Matter worked out of several early threats. Kewaskum put two runners aboard in the first, but Matter recorded a strikeout and a pop out to escape the inning. Sheboygan also turned double plays in the second and third to keep the game tied.
The A’s had an early scoring opportunity of their own in the first. George Hoss singled and stole second, but Kewaskum starter Braden Bothe followed with three consecutive strikeouts to strand him.
Harry Steldt doubled to open the fourth inning, giving Sheboygan another chance to take the lead. Steldt advanced to third on Jimmy Juergensen’s groundout, but a groundout ended the inning with the game still scoreless.
Kewaskum scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fifth. After Matter recorded the first out, three consecutive walks loaded the bases. Nolan Sand entered in relief, and Brody Nolan singled to right to score Griff Lietzau. The A’s prevented a second run from scoring on the play, throwing Sean Gregorius out at the plate. Sand then worked out of the bases-loaded situation with a strikeout to limit the damage to one run.
Matter took the loss despite allowing only one run on four hits over 4⅓ innings. He struck out four and walked five. Sand followed with 3⅔ scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out three.
Sheboygan’s defense turned four double plays, including twin killings in the sixth and eighth innings that kept the deficit at one.
The A’s mounted one final threat in the ninth. Steldt singled and Ty Wuytack followed with another hit to put two runners aboard with one out. Nolan Vincent responded with a strikeout and a pop out to finish the shutout.
Steldt led Sheboygan’s offense by going 2-for-4 with a double. Hoss and Wuytack recorded the A’s other two hits.
The A’s return to NEWBL action Thursday when they travel to face the Appleton Legends.
