A’s Drop Sunday Doubleheader at Lombard

The Sheboygan A’s endured a difficult Sunday at Madison Meadows Park, dropping both games of a Wisconsin State League doubleheader to the Lombard Orioles.
Lombard won the opener 11-2 before taking the nightcap 5-2. Combined with Green Bay winning three of four games against Kenosha over the weekend, the results dropped Sheboygan from first to tied for second in the WSL, a half game behind Green Bay. Green Bay now leads the league at 14-8, while Lombard and Sheboygan are each 13-8.
The Orioles took control of game one immediately, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sheboygan answered in the third when Hudson Wagner singled, George Hoss walked and Chase Hanselman delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Lombard added an unearned run in the bottom of the third before breaking the game open with four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. The A’s committed four errors in the game, with several of the mistakes extending innings and contributing to Lombard’s scoring.
Harry Steldt provided Sheboygan’s other run with a solo home run in the sixth. Cal Casper finished with two doubles, while Hanselman, Hoss, Wagner and Steldt also collected hits.
Brad Rindfleisch took the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits over four innings. Casey Stone pitched the final two innings.
Sheboygan struck first in game two but could not hold the lead. Alex Ames walked to begin the game and later scored when Jimmy Juergensen grounded into a fielder’s choice, giving the A’s a 1-0 advantage.
Lombard answered with all five of its runs in the bottom of the third. An error allowed the tying run to reach before Ryan Colucci singled home a run, Evan Schmitt added a sacrifice fly and Joe Mrowiez followed with an RBI single. Parker Reinke then capped the inning with a two-run home run to left, putting the Orioles ahead 5-1.
The A’s had opportunities to cut into the deficit but stranded several runners. In the sixth, Steldt doubled and Juergensen singled before Casper brought home a run with an RBI single. Sheboygan later loaded the bases, but Lombard escaped the inning without allowing further damage.
Steldt led the offense with three hits, including two doubles. Juergensen added two hits and an RBI, while Casper drove in the other Sheboygan run.
Joe Richardson allowed five runs, all unearned, on four hits over three innings. Cade Voelker followed with three perfect innings of relief, striking out three and retiring all nine batters he faced.
A pivotal doubleheader now awaits Tuesday night, when the A’s visit the first-place Blue Ribbons for a weeknight doubleheader.
