Six-Run First Inning Sends A’s Past West Allis, Extends Lead in WSL Standings

The Sheboygan A’s wasted little time taking control Thursday night, scoring six runs in the first inning on the way to an 8-5 victory over the West Allis Nationals in Wisconsin State League action at Wildwood Park.

With the win, the A’s improved to 11-4 in league play to remain in first place, while West Allis dropped to 10-7 and remained in second.

The game’s turning point came immediately as Sheboygan sent 11 batters to the plate in the opening frame. Alex Ames started the rally with a single before Connor Lasch drove in the game’s first run with an RBI double. Hudson Wagner followed by reaching on an error that allowed Harry Steldt to score, Chase Hanselman delivered a two-run single, Cal Casper added an RBI single, and Ames capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to give the A’s a commanding 6-0 advantage.

West Allis answered with a run in the second on Aaron Goecks’ RBI single, but Sheboygan extended its lead to 7-1 in the bottom half of the inning when Jimmy Juergensen singled home Lasch.

The A’s added their final run in the fourth. Riley Palmquist was hit by a pitch, advanced into scoring position, and came home on Wagner’s RBI single to make it 8-1.

West Allis chipped away late, getting a solo home run from Zach Rizzo in the fifth before taking advantage of a pair of sixth-inning errors to score twice. Max Montgomery added an RBI single in the inning, and later tripled home a run in the eighth to trim the deficit to 8-5, but the Nationals would get no closer.

Eric Schmitz earned the victory, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings while striking out two. Jared Reklaitis closed out the final four innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven to record the save.

Lasch paced the offense with three hits, including a double, and drove in one run while scoring once. Hanselman doubled, singled and drove in two runs, while Wagner collected two RBIs.

The A’s are back home tonight for a rain makeup date against the Menasha Macs in Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League action. First pitch is at 7:30 PM.

Rain Makeup Dates: On July 21, the A’s and Green Bay Blue Ribbons will play a double header starting at 6:30 PM in Green Bay to make up the two rain outs in Green Bay this season. on July 27, the A’s will travel to Burlington to resume their game from earlier this season that got haulted due to rain. The game will resume where it left off, with the A’s leading 7-4 in the top of the third inning.
