A’s Hold Off Late Menasha Rally for 5-4 NEWBL Victory

Posted: July 10, 2026

The Sheboygan A’s built an early three-run lead, then withstood a late comeback effort from the Menasha Macs to earn a 5-4 victory Friday night in Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League action at Wildwood Park.

With the win, the A’s improved to 5-4 in the NEWBL, while Menasha fell to 8-3.

Sheboygan grabbed the lead in the opening inning. Chase Hanselman worked a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out by Harry Steldt, and scored when Connor Lasch lined a two-out single into center.

The A’s doubled their advantage in the third after Alex Ames singled, moved to third on Hanselman’s sacrifice fly, and came home on Steldt’s sacrifice fly to center.

Menasha cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth when Colin Nigl doubled and eventually scored on a groundout that included an error, but Sheboygan answered immediately in the bottom half. Cal Casper reached on an error and scored on George Hoss‘ RBI single before Hoss came home later in the inning on Hanselman’s two-out RBI single, stretching the lead to 4-1.

The Macs pulled within two in the fifth on Jack Anzelmo’s RBI double, but the A’s added what proved to be the decisive run in the sixth. Moxson Kernz reached on an error, advanced to third on another Menasha miscue, and scored on Ames’ sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

Menasha made things interesting in the seventh when Anzelmo launched a two-run homer to left field, cutting the Sheboygan lead to 5-4. The A’s had a chance to add insurance in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with one out, but Owen Ripley escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.

Nolan Sand took over in relief and closed the door. After working around an error in the eighth, he stranded two runners in the ninth by retiring Colin Nigl on a game-ending groundout to preserve the one-run victory.

Joe Richardson earned the win in his second appearance for the A’s, allowing two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out eight. Sand picked up the save, working the final 3 2/3 innings with one earned run allowed and one strikeout.

Lasch led the A’s offense with two hits and an RBI. Hoss also collected two hits while driving in a run and scoring once. Nick Tenny finished with two hits, while Ames, Hanselman, and Steldt each drove in a run.

The A’s continue NEWBL play Saturday at home against the Greenville Stars at 1 PM. It’s Meijer Family Day Saturday, plus Taylor Schwarz will be inducted into the Sheboygan A’s Hall of Fame between games of the doubleheader. Tickets are available at SheboyganBaseball.org.
