Defensive Miscues Again Cost A’s in 4-1 Loss to Appleton

The Sheboygan A’s were undone by defensive mistakes Tuesday night, committing four errors that led to three unearned runs in a 4-1 loss to the Appleton Legends in Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League play.
Despite another strong outing from starting pitcher Shaun Gavin, the A’s could not overcome a rough defensive performance and a quiet night at the plate. Sheboygan managed six hits but stranded eight runners.
Appleton took advantage of Sheboygan’s mistakes in the second inning. After Cole Dornfeld reached on an error and Alex Hanneman reached on another miscue, the Legends manufactured two runs without recording a hit. A sacrifice bunt moved runners into scoring position before Luke Krull delivered a sacrifice fly. A throwing error on the play allowed another run to score, giving Appleton a 2-0 lead.
Gavin settled in after the rocky inning and kept the A’s within striking distance. The right-hander allowed just five hits over seven innings, striking out seven without issuing a walk. He generated 12 swinging strikes and threw 63 of his 94 pitches for strikes.
Appleton added another run in the fifth when Krull doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, stretching the lead to 3-0.
Sheboygan finally broke through in the seventh. Cal Casper singled and advanced to third on a base hit by Lucas Lemons. Alex Ames then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Casper and cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The A’s were unable to build on the rally. Appleton answered with an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Peyton Just singled and later scored on a Nick Terrell base hit.
Nick Tenny led Sheboygan offensively with two hits, while Ames, Casper, Connor Lasch, and Lemons each added a hit. Ames also reached base twice after being hit by a pitch and drove in the A’s lone run.
Cade Voelker worked a scoreless eighth inning in relief for Sheboygan.
The loss drops the A’s in Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League play to 1-2 as they continue a busy stretch of games. Sheboygan is back on the road tonight in Green Bay for a Wisconsin State League contest, and returns home Thursday night to host the Legends against at 7:30 PM for Youth Hockey Night, presented by Curt G.
