The Sheboygan A’s came away with a split Saturday at the Wisconsin State League Challenge, a weekend that brings all Wisconsin State League teams to Sheboygan for regular season neutral-site games.
The A’s dropped their opener to the Kenosha Kings 9-2 before responding with a 4-3 victory over the Addison Braves later in the day. The A’s were the visiting team on the scoreboard for both games despite the games being played in Sheboygan.
Trailing 1-0 after the first inning of game one, Emmett Selin, Hudson Wagner and Alex Ames singled in the second, with Ames driving in Selin to tie the game. The A’s then took a 2-1 lead in the third when Jacob Neese doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Juergensen.
Kenosha answered quickly. JT Reed and Jack Ryan each homered in the bottom of the third to put the Kings back in front, and Kenosha added three more runs in the fourth before pulling away with three runs in the sixth.
Brad Rindfleisch took the loss for Sheboygan, allowing three earned runs over four innings. Casey Stone worked the final two innings in relief.
Ames and Wagner each had two hits for the A’s, while Neese doubled and scored a run.
As much as Kenosha capitalized, Sheboygan did not help itself defensively. The A’s committed five errors in the opener, leading to three unearned runs and extending innings that could have been limited. Those mistakes proved costly in a game that was still within reach early.
The defensive issues carried into the second game, but the A’s found a way to recover.
Against Addison, Sheboygan again fell behind in the first inning before tying the game in the second. Cal Casper walked, Wagner singled and George Hoss walked to load the bases before Ames was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run.
The A’s took the lead in the fourth when Wagner reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an RBI single from Ames. Harry Steldt added to the lead in the fifth with a solo home run, giving Sheboygan a 3-1 advantage.
Addison tied the game in the sixth without recording a hit in the inning, taking advantage of four Sheboygan errors to score twice and even the game at 3-3.
The A’s answered in the eighth. Ames singled, moved to second on a groundout and advanced to third on a passed ball. After Steldt was intentionally walked, Nick Tenny delivered the go-ahead single, scoring Ames and putting Sheboygan in front 4-3.
Nolan Sand closed the door in the bottom of the eighth, working around a leadoff single and getting help from Casper, who threw out a runner attempting to steal third. Sand finished the inning with a groundout to seal the win.
Eric Schmitz gave the A’s seven strong innings, allowing three runs, only one earned, on three hits while striking out four. Sand worked a scoreless eighth in relief.
Ames finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Steldt homered, drove in a run and scored twice. Tenny had two hits, including the game-winner, and Neese and Juergensen each doubled.
The split kept Sheboygan from letting a frustrating defensive day turn into a lost day. Still, the A’s committed nine errors across the two games, leading to five unearned runs. The pitching staff continued to give the team chances to win, but the defensive mistakes made both games more difficult than they needed to be. The A’s will close out the weekend at home Sunday at 11 AM against the defending league champion Lombard Orioles.
