Jimmy Juergensen delivered the biggest swing of the young season Thursday night, launching a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Sheboygan A’s to a 7-5 victory over the Appleton Legends at Wildwood Park.
Trailing 5-4 entering their final at-bat, the A’s mounted one last rally against Appleton reliever Grant Bader. Jacob Neese opened the inning with a single before Chase Hanselman followed with a base hit. With two runners aboard, Juergensen drove a pitch over the right field fence to send the home crowd into celebration and secure Sheboygan’s first Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League victory of the season.
The A’s struck first in the second inning. Hanselman doubled and later scored on Nick Tenny’s RBI single to center field, giving Sheboygan a 1-0 lead.
Appleton answered with two runs in the third on Luke Krull’s two-run triple before extending its lead to 3-1 on Cole Dornfeld’s solo home run in the fourth.
Sheboygan responded immediately in the bottom half of the fourth. Harry Steldt doubled to begin the inning and eventually scored, while Hanselman came around on a passed ball and throwing error to tie the game at 3-3.
The Legends regained the advantage in the fifth, scoring twice to take a 5-3 lead. Appleton collected four consecutive hits in the inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Bubba Thompson and Evan Olson.
Tenny brought the A’s back within a run in the seventh when he connected for a solo home run to left field, making it 5-4 and setting the stage for the late-game heroics.
Hanselman finished 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Tenny went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Juergensen recorded three RBIs, all coming on the game-winning blast. Steldt added two hits, including a double, and Neese contributed a pair of hits in the victory.
On the mound, Noah Imrie kept the A’s within striking distance over six innings, striking out six while allowing five runs. Cade Voelker was outstanding in relief, tossing three scoreless innings with four strikeouts to earn the victory. Voelker retired nine of the 10 hitters he faced and did not allow a hit over the final three frames.
With the win, the A’s improved to 1-1 in NEWBL play.
