A’s Fall Just Short Against West Allis

BURLINGTON – A sacrifice fly and three home runs provided the West Allis Nationals of Burlington with all the runs they needed to take a hard-fought 6-5 Wisconsin State League victory over the Sheboygan A’s Thursday night in Burlington.
The win pretty much ices West Allis’ lock on second place in the league and leaves the A’s in a dogfight for third place. The Nationals still have an outside shot at a first-place tie with Lombard. The Nationals would need to win out and the Orioles lose out in order for that to happen.
Bennet Becker made his first start for the A’s and pitched six solid innings against this hard-hitting Nationals club.
A couple of hits and a sacrifice fly got West Allis off to a 1-0 first-inning lead and then Kyle Bullock’s 3-run home run made it 4-0 after three and after five it was 5-0 after Jacobv Kaiser’s solo home run.
But with two out and nobody on base in the 6th inning, the A’s launched a rally with four straight hits (a Ross Krist double, Harry Steldt RBI single, Jacob Neese single, and Mark Wanner 2-run double) for a 5-3 score after six. Then TD Walker tied it at 5-all with a 2-run 8th inning double and A’s fans, quiet all night, came to life.
But in the bottom of the eighth Charlie Bullock belted a solo home to give West Allis the 6-5 win.
The A’s take their 24-27 record to Menasha for a Northeastern Wisconsin League double-header tonight beginning at 6:30 PM.
