A’s Hang On, Nip Menasha
Posted: July 18, 2011
Save the arms is the cry of the Sheboygan A’s this week as they face a 10 games in 7 days schedule.
Last night was the start of that schedule and the A’s got yet another determined pitching performance. This time it was Collin Weyer who battled the hard-hitting Macs and the intense heat for seven innings and left with a 6-2 lead.
Connor Lenz took the ball and and struck out three straight in the eighth, but ran into probems in the ninth when he walked three and committed a costly error to allow the Macs to get within one run. Shaun Wegner came on with the tying run on second base and recorded a strikeout of MenashA’s clean-up hitter to save the win.
Menasha took a 2-0 lead in the third, but the A’s erupted for four runs in the fourth. An RBI double by Grant Berkovitz (playing his first game after sitting out with a shoulder injury), a sacrifice fly by Justin Hunt and a clutch 2-out, 2-run double by Charlie Reschke accounted for the runs.
The A’s made it 5-2 with a base hit and stolen base by Derek Peake and an RBI double by Ryan Solberg. They got what would prove to be the winning run in the seventh when Colin Willis singled, stole second, and came all the way around to score when the catcher’s throw went into centerfield.
The win puts the A’s at 6-7 and back into third place in the Northeastern Wisconsin League. The club is 17-13 overall.
The team plays a doubleheader in Oshkosh Tuesday night and a single game in Kenosha Wednesday before returning home to meet Manitowoc in the big Bud Light Night game Thursday night. Larry’s Distributing will be awarding major prizes every inning and 16 oz. Bud Lights will sell or $2.50 in the concessions stand. Manitowoc is leading both the Northeastern Wisconsin League and the Wisconsin State League.
Thursday’s game gets under way at 7:30 with the ballpark opening at 6:30 p.m.
