A’s Enter Final Stretch With Two League Championships Still in Play

The final stretch of the regular season will carry plenty of meaning for the Sheboygan A’s, who remain in contention for championships in both the Wisconsin State League and Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League.
In the Wisconsin State League, Sheboygan enters the final stretch with a magic number of two to clinch at least a share of the regular-season championship. Any combination of A’s wins and Lombard Orioles losses totaling two would guarantee Sheboygan no worse than a tie for first place.
The magic number to win the championship outright is three.
Sheboygan has two league games remaining, beginning with the completion of a rain-halted game against the Kenosha Kings in Burlington on Monday, July 27. The A’s will resume play with a 7-4 lead in the third inning.
The A’s will then open play in the Wisconsin State League Tournament on Saturday, August 1, in Oshkosh against the West Allis Nationals. That game will also count toward the regular-season standings, making it the A’s final league game of the season.
The Wisconsin State League Tournament, held August 1-2 in Oshkosh, features the league’s four Wisconsin-based teams while the Lombard Orioles and Addison Braves compete in the NABF National Tournament. Although played after much of the regular season has concluded, the tournament is a separate event and does not determine the Wisconsin State League champion. The tournament features a round-robin format, with the top two teams in the standings after pool play advancing to the championship game. Sheboygan will face West Allis at noon on Saturday, followed by Green Bay at 2:30 PM. The A’s will wrap up round-robin play against Kenosha at 11 AM Sunday before the tournament championship game at 4 PM.
The WSL championship is awarded solely based on the final regular-season standings. Sheboygan is looking to capture its first Wisconsin State League title since 2000.
The A’s also have plenty at stake in the Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League.
All five NEWBL teams qualify for the postseason, with the No. 1 seed receiving a bye directly into the championship series. Appleton and Menasha are the only teams still in contention for the top seed.
Sheboygan currently sits at 7-7, and in third place with two regular-season games remaining. Any combination of A’s wins and Greenville Stars losses totaling two would secure a home playoff game for Sheboygan on Tuesday, July 28.
If Sheboygan and Greenville finish tied in the standings, Greenville would receive the higher seed based on the head-to-head tiebreaker.
The opening round of the NEWBL playoffs will be played Tuesday, July 28, with the No. 2 seed hosting No. 5 and the No. 3 seed hosting No. 4. The two winners will meet Wednesday at the home of the higher-seeded team.
That winner will advance to face the No. 1 seed in a best-of-three championship series beginning Monday, August 3, with games one and three being at the higher seed.
