Disastrous Fifth Sinks A’s in Appleton

Posted: June 15, 2023

Outside of the fifth inning Wednesday night, the A’s allowed only one base hit, a single in the bottom of the second. However, the A’s had about as bad of a fifth inning as you can have, leading to an 8-4 loss on the road to Appleton.

The Legends used five singles, a double, two errors, and a hit batter to score all eight of their runs in the bottom of the fifth and take a 8-0 lead. The lead would eventually be cut in half as the A’s scored four in the top of the seventh to try and claw back into it, but it was too little, too late.

The A’s had the leadoff hitter on reach second base three times with no one out, only to see them not score.

The A’s erratic defense to start the season continued as well, as the club committed six errors in total Wednesday, making their season total climb to 38 errors in just 19 games. Their opponents have committed just 22.

The loss drops the defending Northeastern Wisconsin League champions to the bottom of the NEWBL standings at 1-3, tied with Appleton. Green Bay holds the top spot at 3-0, followed by Kewaskum (2-1), then Menasha (1-1). The A’s sit at 10-9 overall, and 4-5 in the Wisconsin State League.

The A’s are back at it tonight at home for Midwest Communications night when they host the Milwaukee Heavy Hitters in a non-league matchup. The Heavy Hitters, formally known as the Milwaukee Jaguars, defeated the Green Bay Blue Ribbons 19-7 Wednesday night. Free tickets to tonight’s game are available at the Midwest Communications studios until 5 PM, over on Washington Ave. The 2023 season is presented by Meijer.
