Champs! A’s Clinch NEWBL Championship with DH Sweep of Menasha

Posted: July 13, 2022

The Sheboygan A’s are your 2022 Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League Champions!

It didn’t happen until close to midnight last night, but after defeating the Menasha Macs 7-6 in walk-off fashion in game one, and taking game two 4-2, the A’s guaranteed that they would at worst finish with five losses in the NEWBL. With Kewaskum and Appleton already sitting at five losses, and the A’s owning the tie-breaker with both clubs, the A’s are the league champions.

It’s the first NEWBL championship for the A’s since joining the NEWBL in 2004.

The NEWBL champion used to be crowned following the league playoffs, in which the A’s finished as runner up five times. In 2017, the league altered its format to declare the league champion the winner of the regular-season title. They then instituted an end-of-season tournament which was separate from the league title. The A’s won the tournament last season.

The championship gives the A’s their third championship of the season, as the team won the season-opening Play Ball Tournament championship and the Wisconsin Amateur Baseball Classic earlier this season.

The A’s had to come from behind in dramatic fashion to take game one last night. The A’s scored four in the final inning to complete the comeback. Caleb Lorbecki (UW-Milwaukee) hit a hard ground ball to Menasha’s shortstop who fielded the ball but then double-pumped while trying to get control and fired a throw over to first that got back their first baseman, allowing Joey Pettit (UW-Whitewater) to score with Cole Miklavcic (Marian University Alum), who was pinch-running and standing on second base, coming in right behind to secure the victory.

After a late start to game two due to rain, the A’s scored two in the third and two in the sixth for all their offense while Davis Wilson (Marian University) went the complete game, striking out 10 and scattering 12 hits.

The A’s are back home tonight against Kewaskum at 7:30 PM for Touch-a-Truck Night and Strike Out Hunger Night. Tickets are available online.
