A’s Sweep Burlington Sunday

Posted: July 26, 2021

The Sheboygan A’s went to Menasha Friday night and swept a doubleheader. They did it again Sunday in Burlington.

Sheboygan’s pitching was dominant in all four games.

In control from start to finish at Burlington in game one Sunday, Eric Schmitz threw a 6-hitter, three of them went to Burlington’s Nate Renkis whose fifth-inning home run accounted for the Barons’ only run.

Jimmy Juergensen’s two-run homer started the scoring for the A’s in the third and Joey Pettit’s two-run single in the seventh ended it. Juergensen and Jacob Neese both had two hits.

Marion University staff mates Bryce Lovisa and Mac Doherty combined on a 4-hitter in game two to keep the A’s in control. Burlington made it interesting in the last inning, getting the tying run to second base before Doherty responded with a game-ending strikeout.

Mark Wanner doubled and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on Neese’s base hit in the top of the seventh. Neese, Harry Steldt, and Juergensen all finished with two hits.

The A’s finish 15-15 in the Wisconsin State League, good for third place.

The team opens up NEWBL Tournament play tonight in Appleton against the Legends. The NEWBL tournament is a round-robin format. On Tuesday, they are home with Menasha at 6:30 for a doubleheader, with one game counting towards the regular season and the other towards the NEWBL tournament. Tuesday is Christmas in July presented by the Sheboygan Optimist Club. Santa Claus is expected to make an offseason appearance at the park.
