Nationals Hold off A’s 4-3

The Sheboygan A’s trailed from the get-go, but it was a pair of 7th inning errors that decided the exhibition contest as the West Allis Nationals posted a 4-3 victory in a game played in Burlington. The loss puts the A’s at 1-1 for their exhibition season which continues Wednesday, June 24, in Manitowoc.
Jackson Pothast (Heartland Community College) had a super outing in his first A’s assignment, but had to take the loss when with two out in the second, he surrendered a single and then an RBI double to Tomas Pinet. The A’s never tied or led after that, and despite five strikeouts and a total yield of three hits in his 50-pitch, 4-inning start he had to take the “L”.
Steele Beaty homered for a 2-0 National lead in the sixth, but Ross Krist (UW-Platteville) cut it to one again when his double drove in the first A’s run of the game. But two errors in the seventh (a dropped pop foul was followed by a walk and then an errant throw to second base on a sure double play) led to two West Allis runs and a 4-1 lead.
Tyler Brandenberg (Purdue University) hit a mammoth two-run home run in the eighth to bring it to 4-3, but Nationals’ veteran Rob Coe struck out the side in the ninth to ice the game.
Krist led the A’s with a single and double.
A’s manager Tim Moyer again expressed pleasure with his pitching staff. Ethan Scherg (Sheboygan Legion), Jacob Bonin (Sheboygan Legion), Ryan Fields (Edgewood College alum) and Davis Wilson (Bethel University) followed Pothast to the mound and the five combined to hold the strong Nationals ball club to just six hits.
