SHEBOYGAN, WI- After two heart-stopping wins in the opening days of the tournament, the Sheboygan A’s suffered two difficult losses on the final day and were eliminated from the Class A State Tournament held at Wildwood Baseball Park.
In the tournament opener Thursday, the team scored five runs in the last inning to beat West Allis 7-6.
In their second game, they fell behind 4-0 to Kenosha but took the lead with six runs in the fourth inning. Mark Wanner stole home with the tying run in that inning, and then Taylor Grimm doubled in two go ahead runs.
Kenosha tied it in the fifth to force extra innings and the A’s won it in a walk-off home run by Wanner.
That left the A’s and the Sussex Cardinals as the only two unbeaten teams in the tournament, but that didn’t last long as the Cardinals whipped the A’s 13-0. A’s pitchers couldn’t find the strike zone and walked 14 Cardinals and surrendered 11-hits.
Taylor Grimm’s 2-run double gave the A’s a 6-6 tie in the seventh inning of the semi-final game, but winning pitcher Jason Bunton, a former A’s player, singled in the walk-off run in the eighth inning and ended the day for the A’s.
The embattled Kenosha Kings dropped the finale to the solid Sussex club, 8-1.
Now 32-24 for the season, the A’s will finish the season in the Northeastern Wisconsin League playoffs this week. The A’s open the single-game semi-finals on the road in Menasha on Wednesday night at 7:30 PM.
The A’s are the #3 seed in the playoffs. If the A’s win, they will play the winner of the Appleton-Green Bay matchup on Friday night. If Appleton wins, the A’s would be at Appleton on Friday. If Green Bay wins, the A’s would host Green Bay on Friday at 7:30 PM. A loss to Menasha on Wednesday would end the A’s season.
