Something to Love: A’s Release 2017 Schedule
Posted: February 14, 2017
Sheboygan, WI – The Sheboygan A’s have released their schedule for the 2017 season. The A’s will play 50 regular season games between the Wisconsin State League (WSL) and the Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League (NEWBL). In addition, the A’s could have as many as 17 additional games between season tournaments and post-season play. At a minimum, the A’s will play 56 games this summer, with as many as 67 being possible from the end of May until mid-August.
Sheboygan will start the season hosting NEWBL newcomer Marinette in a special 2 PM doubleheader on Saturday, May 27. In the first promotion of the year, renowned mid-west musician Pat McCurdy will be performing a pre-game concert prior to the contest.
The full promotional schedule will be released in the spring.
The NEWBL for the 2017 seasons consists of the Appleton Legends, Green Bay Storm, Manitowoc Bandits, Marinette Redbirds, Menasha Macs and the A’s. Marinette, who reentered the NEWBL after close to 10-years away from the league, takes the place of Oshkosh, who elected to drop out of the NEWBL. Oshkosh is still a member of the Wisconsin State League. The league plays a 20-game regular season schedule, with the A’s having two home and two road games against each of the other league teams.
The A’s open up WSL play on Wednesday, May 31 against the West Allis Nationals in Sheboygan. The WSL will again adopt a 30-game regular season schedule, with each team facing each other five times. Teams in the WSL remain unchanged in 2017, with the Addison Braves, De Pere Dodgers, Kenosha Kings, Lombard Orioles, Oshkosh Giants joining the A’s and Nationals to form one of the top semi-pro leagues in the mid-west.
For the second straight year, the A’s will be hosting a division of the Wisconsin Amateur Baseball Classic, a 20-team tournament hosted by WSL affiliate member, West Bend 7 Up. Pool play will be held July 14-15 in Sheboygan, with the tournament semi-finals and championship games being held July 16 in West Bend. Last season, the A’s fell in the semi-final 7-6 to eventual tournament champion West Bend.
The A’s will also be hosting the main portion of the Wisconsin State League Challenge July 7-9, where all WSL teams will be in Sheboygan competing. The Challenge was created to get the league schedule up to 30 games while putting those extra games in a central location to avoid multiple long road trips for teams.
The A’s end the regular season with a grueling stretch that starts off with a four-game home weekend against the Lombard Orioles, winners of the last 13 WSL regular season titles. After four games in two days against Lombard, the A’s will then travel to Menasha for the final regular season meeting between the two teams, who have met in each of the last four NEWBL playoff championship series. Unfortunately for the A’s, they came up on the losing end all four times. The A’s will then have six more games in the following five days, finishing the regular season with a stretch of 11 games in eight days.
Following the regular season, the A’s will host a revised Wisconsin State League Invitational Tournament. In its second year, the tournament will move to a double-elimination format, featuring all of the WSL’s Wisconsin based teams. In addition, the Southeastern Wisconsin Baseball League will be participating in the tournament as well. Seedings for the tournament will be based on the regular season standings. The tournament will take place August 1-6 in Sheboygan.
To round out the season, the A’s will play in the NEWBL playoffs. The playoff format remains unchanged, as the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be single elimination games. The quarter-finals format will have the #6 seed visit the #3 seed, while the #4 seed hosts the #5 seed. Winners advance to meet the #1 and #2 seeds, who have first round byes, in the semi-finals. The championship series will be a best-of-three format.
All A’s home games will be played at Wildwood Baseball Park in Sheboygan. Monday-Friday games will begin at 7:30 PM.
