A’s Salvage Series Split in Lombard

Posted: June 27, 2016

Following humiliating 9-0 and 10-0 loses Saturday, the Sheboygan A’s rebounded on Sunday to grind out 6-3 and 6-4 victories over the front-running and defending Wisconsin State League champion Lombard Orioles.

General Manager Denny Moyer called Sunday’s effort “As gutty a performance as I’ve ever seen from a Sheboygan A’s team.”

Short of pitching and playing in 90-degree heat, the club responded to Saturday’s embarrassment by handing Lombard its first two losses of the State League season.

On Saturday the A’s managed only six hits all day, three in each game. Taylor Grimm went 3-for-5 on the day.

Sunday was a different story. The A’s pounded out 10 hits in the first game and 12 in the second. But it was a determined pitching effort that decided it. In game one, Weston Nelson gave up only two runs in 5? innings. Connor Keating threw the last inning and ? and didn’t give up a hit.

In the second game, Dylan Detert started and pitched three innings before exiting the game with cramping. Ben Folger got the win in relief and Cole Heili the save.

While it was an all-out effort for all the pitchers it was a particularly courageous effort for injured outfielders Detert and Heili. Despite their injuries (cramps for Detert and a knee injury in a Saturday collision with the outfield fence for Heili), oppressive heat and the prospect of facing the tough Lombard line-up, they took the ball and took it to the Orioles.

Doubles by Harry Steldt, Mitch Sutton, and Detert got the A’s off to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the first game. They never trailed after that. Steldt and Sutton both finished with a pair of doubles.

Detert led off game two with a home run and the A’s were never headed after that. He added a single for a two-hit game. Sutton, TD Walker, and Nelson all had a single and a double in the game, and Trevor Cho a double. Ben Folger got the win in relief.

The A’s now trail Lombard by two games in the loss column. The A’s, now 15-5 overall, 7-4 WSL, 7-1 (NEWBL) are home Tuesday against De Pere which swept Addison this weekend in WSL play. Tuesday is $1 hot dog night. The A’s will be home Thursday (Midwest Communications Night) and Friday (Fish FRYday Night) this week as well.
