Kenosha’s 2-Run 8th Defeats A’s 7-6

Posted: June 11, 2015

The A’s were leading, 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth when the Kenosha Kings loaded the bases with nobody out. The A’s got a lucky break, as a one-hopper came back to the pitcher, who fired home, then to first for a double play to get two outs.

But there were still two runners on base and elation quickly became deflation when A.J. Kaprellian doubled to the right field corner to knock them both in and give Kenosha a 7-6 lead. The lead became the win when the A’s went quietly in the ninth.

It wasn’t as though the A’s deserved a win, they didn’t play well – A’s pitchers walked 12, A’s defenders committed three errors that led directly to Kings’ runs, the offense made a costly base-running blunder. Still the sheer grit of this outfit pulled you in. Dylan Detert, Wyatt Olson and Carter Amundson fueled hopes with two hits each.

But when the sap dried, gritty or no, the A’s were on the short end of a 7-6 nail-biter. The loss dropped them to 6-4 for the season (all four losses on the road) and 2-4 in the Wisconsin State League. The A’s are off until Saturday when they host the perennial league champion Lombard Orioles in a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader at Wildwood Park

Between games of the doubleheader, the A’s Hall of Fame committee will induct championship manager Dave Moyer into the Club’s Hall of Fame.
