Win Over Chicago Clout Gives A’s Weekend Split

Posted: June 2, 2014

A 7-3 victory over the Chicago Clout in Sunday afternoon’s exhibition game gave the Sheboygan A’s a split for the weekend. The A’s lost to Menasha Friday night by a 2-1 score and split with West Allis Saturday, winning 9-4 and then losing 12-3.

Friday vs. Menasha

The A’s managed to score only one run off Menasha ace Jason Wierschke Saturday night as Menasha took a 2-1 win in the rematch of 2013 championship series teams. That run came in the sixth when Cole Heili as hit by a pitch and scored all the way from first on a Harry Steldt double. So dominating was Wierschke that only those two, plus Chad Langley, who singled in the sixth and moved up on an infield out, got as far as second base. Until that Langley hit led off the sixth, Wierschke was throwing a perfect game.

Derek Loomans took the tough loss for the A’s limiting the tough MACs to just six hits over eight innings. He only walked two, both coming in his final inning. Taylor Ditter pitched perfect ninth, but it didn’t matter because after Steldt’s double, Wierschke efficiently retired the final eight A’s batsmen of the night.

Saturday vs. West Allis

Bandon Winfield pitched out of a couple scrapes Saturday and didn’t give up an earned run to the hard-hitting West Allis club until Mike Merrick’s 2-run home run in the sixth. Blake Fleischman and Zach Brenner each has two hits, Eric Solberg a home run and Harry Steldt and Dan Barwick each a 2-run double to lead the A’s to a 9-4 victory in game one.

The A’s broke up a 1-1 tie with a 3-run third and never came close to trailing after that. Steldt’s 2-run double was the big blow of the inning.

From its 4-run outburst in the first inning, West Allis remained in complete control of the second game and cruised to a 12-3 victory.

The A’s managed only four hits off the Nationals Jimmy Jungbauer. Solberg drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Cole Heili and a double and Fleishman an RBI single.

Sunday vs. Chicago

Solberg and Fleischman drove in runs in the 3-run second inning Sunday when the A’s took a 4-1 lead they would never lose.

Solberg delivered a 2-run single in the eighth to ice the game and wind up with a 3RBI, 2-hit game. Colin Willis had a single, double and two stolen bases, TJ McCoy and Fleischman two hits each.

Zach Brenner made his pitching debut with the club, working five innings. He gave up one run on five hits. Max Kramsky and Taylor Ditter finished it out.

The A’s, 3-2 overall, get a couple days off until they host the Northern Illinois Legends at Wildwood Park Wednesday when it is Plymouth Dirt Track Night.
