Kenosha’s Big Inning Sinks A’s In Opener
Posted: July 31, 2013
Randy Johnson had things under control. Going into the ninth inning he had given up just four harmless singles and only one Sheboygan A’s base-runner got as far as second base. He didn’t need a big inning, but his teammates, with the help of some disastrous A’s defensive miscues, gave him one anyway.
The Kenosha Kings scored six runs in the fourth inning and took a 1-0 lead in the Langsdorf League championship playoff with a 6-1 win over the Sheboygan A’s in Kenosha Tuesday night.
The series resumes at Wildwood Baseball Park Thursday night in Sheboygan. Gametime is 7:30 p.m.
Billy Johnson led off the fourth with a home run. After the home run, a double, a ground out and a hit batsman put runners on first and second with one out. Then Travis Vanderwall hit a ground ball about 12-15 feet to the first base side of second – a perfect double play ball, but Luke Maldonado, who had just won Monday night’s game and several others this season with his fabulous defensive work, muffed it. No double play; not even an out. Kenosha went on collect a half dozen runs in the inning with two more hits, another hit batsman and, and when A’s starter Taylor Schwarz thought he would surely get out of the inning, another painful error.
The A’s got their lone run in the ninth when Cole Heili doubled and scored on Chad Langley’s base hit. Heili led the A’s with a single and a double. Andrew Highland had three base hits for Kenosha.
Nolan Peterson will start for the A’s Thursday night. The club takes a 33-22 overall record into Game 2.
A’s fans are reminded that they have until the end of the week to sign up for the Brewers trip on Labor Day, Sept. 2, when the Brewers play the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cost is $60 for transportation, ticket, tailgate lunch and beverage and for those who care to join in, the final 10th inning celebration of the year back at Wildwood Park.
