A’s Beat Manitowoc, 12-6, To Push Win Streak to 12

Posted: July 12, 2013

The Sheboygan A’s took a commanding early lead, suffered through one bad inning, but had enough juice and enough arm from Frank Pietrantonio to secure a 12-6 win at Manitowoc Thursday night.

The win drives the club’s current win streak to 12 and puts them at 11-6 in the Northeastern Wisconsin League.

Next up is the Wisconsin State League Challenge at Wildwood Park this weekend. The A’s play Oshkosh in the Friday night opener at 7:30. Sheboygan Pine Club and the Strikers Softballers will be the special guests.

Six of the first seven A’s who stepped in the box hit safely and the A’s charged out to a 4-0 first inning lead. They added two more in the second and fourth and four more in the fifth to take an 11-0 lead after five innings.

Meanwhile A’s starter Trevor Nicholson was cruising, allowing only three hits through five innings. But an error cost him two runs and a bunch of extra pitches in the sixth and they took their toll as Manitowoc hitters came up with four runs in the seventh. Another critical error hurt in that inning. Of six total runs he gave up, only one was earned.

With a 12-6 lead with six outs to get, a worn out pitcher, and a staff with arms still recovering from the weekend and needed this coming weekend, skipper Tyler Martin gave the baseball to back-up outfielder Frank Pietrantonio. Pietrantonio delivered two scoreless innings (one hit batsman away from two perfect innings) and the A’s went home the 12-6 winner.

Sam Mattheis was the hitting star for the A’s this night, knocking in two runs with a 4-for-5 night. Greg Rhude drove in a run with two singles and a double, Ryan Schilter had a single and a double and scored four runs, Cole Heili chipped in with a single and a double for three RBI, Harry Steldt and Chad Langley had 2-run hits and Grant Evans a double.

After Friday night’s game against Oshkosh, the A’s play Addison at 7:30 Saturday night, and on Sunday play back-to-back games against Lombard and Kenosha starting at noon..

Saturday has games scheduled at Wildwood at 12, 2:30 and 5 before the A’s play Addison. There is also one tournament game at Field of Dreams (Hummitzsch) at 2:30. On Sunday games are scheduled at 12 and 2:30 at all three diamonds: Wildwood and Field of Dreams (Hummitzsch and Legion).
