Bandits Win, Take 1-0 Playoff Lead

Posted: August 9, 2011

The Manitowoc Bandits snapped the Sheboygan A’s 13-game winning streak and took a 1-0 lead in the best of three Northeastern Wisconsin League playoff with a 6-3 victory over the A’s in Manitowoc Tuesday night.

Game 2 of the series will take place at Wildwood Park in Sheboygan Wednesday night. First pitch is 7:30 p.m.

It was a tough night for the A’s — a tough night afield as three Manitowoc runs were unearned, a tough night against Brennan Rhode, who held to the club to one run until the seventh inning, and a tough night with umpires as two red-shirts were asked to leave early after expressing their opinion on the quality of his work.

The A’s took a 1-0 lead in the second when on Colin Willis’ sacrifice fly, but Manitowoc took charge after that scoring an unearned run on the third and added two more in the fourth – Nat Richter’s hit driving in one and Tommy KaramurA’s sacrifice fly the other.

An error started things in the sixth, and after an out came a couple walks. During the ensuing pitching change, manager Shaun Wegner offered his views on the proceedings and outgoing pitcher Mitch Gardner concurred. Both were thumbed. Harry Steldt came on and got out of the inning, but Manitowoc had a 4-1 lead. Another error helped Manitowoc tally two more in the eighth.

The A’s outhit Manitowoc 11-7, but left 12 on base. Willis led the way with three hits and two runs batted in. Tim Patzman and Grant Berkovitz each had two hits.
