A’s Win; Wilke to Hall of Fame Tonight

Posted: July 23, 2011

It was like a magic show. A reliever turned into a starter. A first baseman-third baseman-emergency catcher turned into a reliever. And when the magician put his wand down, poof, the Sheboygan A’s had a 4-2 win over the Green Bay Storm. Jake Ristow got the win and Harry Steldt the 3-inning scoreless save.

The Friday night victory put the A’s at 20-15 for the season and 9-8 in the Northeastern Wisconsin League. The A’s are now only a half-game behind Menasha in the race for the second place spot. Finishing second will give the A’s home field advantage in the playoffs. Manitowoc has a 4-game lead on the rest of the pack.

The A’s are right back at it tonight, launching a 4-game Wisconsin State League series against the Addison Braves. The first game tonight is at 6 p.m., Sunday at 1 p.m. Between games of tonight’s doubleheader the Sheboygan A’s Hall of Fame Committee will induct Randy Wilke as the 23rd member of the Hall. Wilke played from 1987-2005 and ran up a .323 career batting average in 817 games. And then between games on Sunday, the A’s will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first State League championship by introducing the members of the 1991 team. Sunday is also Hispanic Day, featuring the DJ sounds of Jr. Medina and tacos from The Spot.

Last night the A’s opened the scoring in the first inning when Derek Peake got on on an error, stole second and scored on Tim Patzman’s double. After Green Bay tied it in the third, the A’s took the lead they would not lose on Justin Hunt’s 2-run home run. Chris Hillesheim made it 3-2 with a solo home run for Green Bay in the sixth and the A’s got an insurance run in the eighth on Patzman’s second double of the game, a wild pitch and Ryan Solberg’s sacrifice fly.

Ristow went the first six innings, striking out seven, walking two and giving up seven hits. Steldt threw the last three with four strikeouts, two walks and one yielded hit.
