Schwarz, Hunt Head Latest A’s Roster Additions

Taylor Schwarz, the A’s starting shortstop of a year ago who posted a .328 batting average in 43 games, heads the latest list of A’s roster additions.

Schwarz is joined by returnees Justin Hunt, a catcher-first baseman, and pitcher Connor Lenz, who filled the closer role for the club last year.

Quality pitchers Parker Schrage, Collin Weyer and Glenn Nowell, fleet outfielder Derek Peake and infielder Greg Rhude round out the latest additions.

Schwarz a standout performer for Sheboygan South and the Sheboygan Legion, played at Madison College and North Carolina Greensboro, before enrolling at Parkside. He is currently the starting shortstop at UW-Parkside and is hitting .256.

Hunt is currently the starting catcher at Purdue North Central and is hitting .259. Playing mostly at first base, Hunt hit .259 for the A’s last summer in 37 games.

Lenz is at Madison Edgewood where he set the school saves record this year Lenz was 2-0 with three saves and a 2.38 earned run average in 14 appearances for the A’s last summer. He is currently 1-1 with five saves and a 2.92 ERA for Edgewood.

Schrage, who hails from Mt. Calvary and played at New Holstein High School where he was named first team all-conference, all-district and all-state. He is now in his second season at Madison College and currently is 3-0 with a 3.20 earned run average.

Weyer is a freshman at Illinois-Chicago where he is 2-0 with a 2.20 earned run average. Weyer landed at D-1 UIC after a brilliant high school career at Milwaukee Marquette. He was a 4-year letterwinner in baseball and football, and the school’s pitcher of the year after setting school records for wins (28) and innings pitched (231).

Peake turned down a football scholarship to play baseball at D-1 UW-Milwaukee. He was a 3-year starter at Waukesha Memorial and first team all-conference in his junior and senior seasons. An outfielder, Peake has blazing speed. At this writing he is struggling with an uncharacteristic .196 average.

Rhude played his high school ball at Plymouth and is surrently at Concordia-Wisconsin. A 2-year all-conference player at Plymouth, Rhude is an infielder, who is hitting .221 as a freshman.

The Sheboygan A's are members of the Wisconsin State League and Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League. The A's have helped develop more than 43 players that have reached professional baseball, including 2002 World Series Champion Jarrod Washburn (Anaheim Angels).
