Patzman Leads A’s to 33-23 2009 Season

Tim Patzman, who hit .389 to lead the Division I UW-Milwaukee Panthers this spring, continued to swing a torrid bat this summer and finished as the Sheboygan A’s leading hitter.

Patzman hit .368 to top the ball club. It was the second time in the last three years that he emerged as the batting champiion. In his last three years with the A’s, he has hit .358, .380 and .368, Ironically, he finished second to Shawn Wozniak in 2008 when he enjoyed his best season. Wozniak hit .422 in 2008.

Patzman led the club in runs scored (49), hits (77), runs batted in (37), doubles (21) triples (4), home runs (5), total bases (121) and slugging percentage (.579) in addition to his .368 batting average.

Kreston Albright led in games played (56), plate appearances (248), base on balls (34) and on base percentage (.444). Matt Schilter led in at bats (243) and stolen bases (15).

Regular players who finished as the leading hitters behind Patzman were Albright, .337, Lucas Wilsing .336, Ryan Schmitz .321, Brett Cleveringa .301, Taylor Schwarz .281, David Novak .272 and Nohl Depies .264.

Schmitz, Mitchell Gardner and Tyler Jones led A’s pitchers. Schmitz, who posted a 3-3 record with a 2.56 earned run average, led the team in innings pitched (59.2), and strikeouts (66). It was the second straight year led the team in strikeouts.

Gardner went 5-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 51 innings, and Jones was 4-1 and 3.12 in 34.2. Lucas Petrie, Will Madson and Brad Mey all went 2-0, Greg Blohowiak and Zach Hoch won three games and Bryan Domonick, Derrick Pankow and Gabe Marshall all added two wins.

The A’s finished their 46th season with an overall 33-22 record. They finished atop the Northeastern Wisconsin League in the regular season with a 20-4 record, but bowed out of the playoffs with two straight losses. They finished 14-18 in the prestigious Wisconsin State League.

Manager Chad Gehr’s club hit for a composite .289 average to .248 for opponents, had a 4.17 earned run average compared to 4.84 for opponents and a .951 fielding average compared to .948 for opponents.

The team will hold its annual awards dinner on Friday night, Jan. 9 at The Bull in Sheboygan Falls. All A’s fans are welcome to attend.

The Sheboygan A's are members of the Wisconsin State League and Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League. The A's have helped develop more than 43 players that have reached professional baseball, including 2002 World Series Champion Jarrod Washburn (Anaheim Angels).
