A’s Beat Menasha in 10; Clinch NEW Top Spot

Posted: July 27, 2009

It was as far from pretty as you can get, but the Sheboygan A’s eked out a 10-inning 6-5 victory over the Menasha MACs at Wildwood Baseball Park Monday night. The win gives the A’s the Northeastern Wisconsin League regular season championship and a bye into the semifinals of the playoffs. The playoff winner will be the NEW champion.

David Novak delivered the game-winning hit to drive in Tim Patzman with the winning run in the 10th inning.

That came after Menasha gave the A’s a tie by walking four straight hitters allowing the A’s to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

No one would have guessed that the game would come down to anything like that. Things looked good for the A’s in the early going. Very good.

Patzman hit a home run in the first inning and after a walk, and a fielder’s choice, Nohl Depies and Novak singled to score a second run.

The 2-0 lead looked like it might hold up as A’s starter Ryan Schmitz was mowing down the MACs to perfection — literally, as the hard-throwing right-hander had a perfect game going with 10 strikeouts until there were two outs in the sixth inning. Then MenashA’s Paul Ebben got the MACs’ first hit, a line drive into center field. After a walk and two more hits, Schmitz got the third out, but not until Menasha had taken a 3-2 lead. Menasha picked up two more in the seventh for a 5-2 lead.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth. A Menasha error started it off and after that, A’s hitters coaxed walks to tie the score at 5-all.

After reliever Mitchell Gardner hung up his third straight goose egg, the A’s got their win in the bottom half of the 10th.

Patzman led off with a double and Kreston Albright got on on a bunt base hit. After one out, Depies and Novak got back to back hits to get Patzman in with the winning run.

Patzman got three hits, Depites and Novak two hits and Novak drove in two runs. Gardner got the win.
