A’s Split at De Pere

Posted: June 1, 2008

The Sheboygan A’s tasted defeat for the first time this year as they split a Northeastern Wisconsin League doubleheader at De Pere. Both games ended in 3-1 scores.

The A’s play again tonight, an exhibition game at Plymouth slated for a 7:30 p.m. start. The A’s are 4-1 going into tonight’s game.

The A’s outhit De Pere 18-11 but were reminded of the baseball axiom that what counts is how many times you touch home plate, not how many times you touch first base.

In the opener, Sheboygan took a 1-0 lead in the third when after two outs, Matt Schilter, Grant Berkovitz and Tim Patzman strung back-to-back-to-back singles. But that was it for A’s scoring as they would leave nine men on base.

Lucas Wilsing surrendered only five hits through 7 1/3 innings, but was saddled With the loss. Schilter and Berkovits each had two hits and Patzman the only RBI for the A’s.

Ryan Schmitz was in control in the second game, but like Lucas in the first, was relieved when his pitch count hit the 100 mark. Brad May worked the final three innings for the save.

Graham Bintliff singled and then came all the way around when Schilter followed with a base hit that was bobbled in the outfield. Schilter scored on Tim Patzman’s sacrifice fly.

Berkovitz drove in the A’s third run with a 2-out single in the third to round out A’s scoring.

In the second game, Bintliff had three hits and Schmitz fanned nine and didn’t give up an earned througn his six innings of work. Mey finished strong, striking out four in the final three innings.
