Schmitz, Salm Have Big Spring Seasons

Posted: May 19, 2008

Sheboygan North grad Ryan Schmitz recently became Beloit College’s record-holder for hits in a single season.

Schmitz belted a single in the first inning of the first game of a doubleheader against Milwaukee School of Engineering to tie the mark, then broke the record with another single in the third inning.

The record-setting hit came off former Sheboygan Post 83 Legion teammate Jordan Gruenke, a South grad now pitching at MSOE.

In the doubleheader that day, Schmitz had five hits and four RBI. The sophomore finished the season with a sparkling .361 batting average, a couple of homers, 24 runs scored and 29 driven in.

Schmitz was named Beloit College “2008 Hitter of the Year” and now holds the single-game hits record with 40.

The shortstop was also named second-team All-Midwest Conference.

Tim Salm, also a Sheboygan North grad, was recently named to the All-Midwest Conference North Division first team after a vote by league coaches.

The senior catcher finished the season tied for best batting average (.386) on the team. He had a team-best 11 doubles and 37 RBI.

Salm, the conference Player of the Week last week, threw out eight of 23 baserunners and posted a .986 fielding percentage.
