Several Sheboygan A’s have received post-season honors from the Wisconsin State League, the League announced.
First-year utility player Joey Pettit (UW-Whitewater) was named the Most Valuable Rookie Pitcher for the 2021 season. Pettit was the only non-Lombard Orioles player to win a major award. Pettit was 2-0 in two starts in Wisconsin State League action, including a nine-inning complete game against West Allis on July 8. He had a 0.44 ERA during his 20.1 innings pitched.
Harry Steldt and Ross Krist were both named to the first All-League team, while Pettit and Mark Wanner received second-team recognition.
Steldt (UW-Stevens Point Alum), was named the first-team first baseman after playing in all 30 league games this season, hitting .302 with three home runs, eight doubles, and 16 runs batted in. Steldt finished second in MVP voting, falling just five points shy of being named MVP.
Joining Steldt on the first team was utility player Ross Krist (UW-Platteville). Krist hit .278 in 29 games for the A’s in WSL play with a .432 on-base percentage. He was tied for second on the A’s with two home runs and was one RBI shy of tieing for the team lead.
Making the All-League second team, outfielder Mark Wanner (Washburn University) hit .307 in 88 at-bats, hitting eight extra-base hits and scoring 17 times.
Joey Pettit was named to the second team at shortstop. Proving how versitale he was last season, Pettit hit .327 in addition to his pitching duties. He reached base at a .477 clip.
The Wisconsin State Leauge Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, October 23 at Blue Harbor Resort and Conference Center in Sheboygan, WI.
