Eighth Inning Magic Leads A’s to Victory

Posted: July 26, 2018

Bottom of the eighth inning. Jake Arens walks. Harry Steldt doubles. TD Walker hits a fly ball to left. Arens tags and scores. Kyle Moyer gets the side out in the ninth.

Those six short simple descriptor phrases were the salient events in one of the tensest games of the season at Wildwood Baseball Park.

The Sheboygan A’s beat the Appleton Legends, 1-0 in a Northeastern Wisconsin League nail-biter Wednesday night.

Sheboygan’s Eric Schmitz and Appleton’s Jack Mahoney hooked up in a dandy of a pitcher’s duel had that had 0-0 showing on the scoreboard when Mahoney left after 6 1/3 and Schmitz left after seven. When Schmitz left, Appleton had only three hits in the book and when Mahoney left, Sheboygan had but four. Both had seven strikeouts. Moyer continued Schmitz’ shutout to get the win; Chris Huettner gave up the game’s only run and took the loss.

The game even had a triple play … one that resulted in the ejection of A’s manager Derek Loomans.

The win gives the A’s a 10-6 record in the Northeastern Wisconsin League, finishing in second place again to Menasha. Appleton drops to 8-7.

Now focusing on a second place finish in the Wisconsin State League, the A’s return to action tonight against De Pere. The 7-inning contest (part of the State League’s fifth game challenge) gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

It’s A1’s birthday party tonight, with A1’s mascot friends in attendance. Anyone who brings three non-perishable food items to the game will get a free general admission ticket.

Wednesday’s win gave the A’s a 30-20 record, marking the eighth straight year the club has won 30 games.
