A’s Beat Manitowoc to Snap Streak

Posted: July 22, 2010

An error opened the gates to a 5-run seventh inning that brought the Sheboygan A’s from a 5-2 deficit to a 7-6 win over the Manitowoc Bandits and kept them in the hunt for the Northeastern Wisconsin League regular season title.

The win puts the A’s at 8-5 in the league, 1/2-game behind Green Bay (10-6). The A’s are scheduled to play at Green Bay tonight, but team followers are urged to watch this website for updates on the status of the contest as huge storms are expected. Manitowoc fell to 9-7, and Appleton, a 7-6 loser to Menasha fell to 10-7. In all, only three games separate the top six teams in the league.

The error got the A’s a base-runner and after one out, Taylor Schwarz and Matt Schilter singled load the bases. A strikeout followed which, except for the lead-off boot would have ended that seventh inning. But the A’s were still alive and Doug Dekoning walked to force in one run and after that Cody Marshall delivered a double to clear the bases and give the A’s a 6-5 lead. Jordan Rennicke’s base hit drove in Marshall with an insurance run.

That was a good thing for A’s fans, too, because after Ryan Eigenberger mowed down Manitowoc in the eighth, the Bandits rallied with a walk and a couple hits off Dekoning to bring the score to 7-6 in the nerve-wracking ninth. But then Dekoning got a strikeout to end the game with the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Matt Schilter and Ryan Schmitz had two hits for the A’s. Eigenberger got the win with a perfect 1 2/3 innings of relief.
