Green Bay Ends A’s Season

Posted: August 9, 2009

The Green Bay Storm brought the 2009 Sheboygan A’ season to an abrupt end Sunday night, posting a 6-3 victory in Green Bay, ending the best of three Northeastern Wisconsin League playoff series in two games.

Green Bay won in Sheboygan Saturday night, 9-5.

Both games were painful in that both saw strong starting pitching and ineffective game-deciding relief pitching.

Tyler Jones had a 3-2 lead going into the eighth inning last night. He was pulled after the first hitter got aboard on an error. After that Zach Hoch walked the first man he faced, gave up a bunt single to the second and walked the third to force in the tying run. Bryan Dominic followed him to the mound and gave up a run on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt upon which Ryan Schmitz atoned for an earlier error with a fine play to record the inning’s first out. Dominick got a strikeout for the second, but then gave up a bloop single to Brett Birkholz that drove in two runs for the final 6-3 score.

The A’s took their 3-2 lead in the sixth when Matt Schilter led off with a double, Tim Patzman advanced him with a base hit and Kreston Albright scored him with the inning’s third straight hit. Then Schmitz came up with a clutch 2-strike sacrifice fly to knock in Patzman and one out later David Novak delivered the base hit that scored Albright with the go-ahead run.

The light-hitting A’s didn’t record a hit after that and managed only six for the game. Patzman got two of the six hits and Schilter’s double was the only extra base hit. Jones surrendered only six hits in his 7+ innings. He struck out two and walked three. Hoch got the loss.

Green Bay’s Jack Van Camp went the distance for the win. He struck out only one and (and that was a disputed called third strike) and walked one.

While on field activities have ended, the ball club will be busy off the field. Deadlines are near for the golf outing and Brewers trip events.
