A’s Lose Opener in Playoffs

Posted: August 9, 2009

With one foot in the grave, the Sheboygan A’s head to Green Bay tonight to resume playoff action in the Northeastern Wisconsin League. Game 2 gets under way at 7:15 tonight at Southwest High School.

Green Bay overcame an injury to its starting pitcher and the absence of two other starters and rose to a 9-5 victory over an A’s team that wasted a great starting pitching effort,

Ryan Schmitz opened and had a 4-hit, 8-strikeout performance going with a string of eight straight outs and a 3-2 lead when manager Chad Gehr replaced him with Derrick Pankow to start the seventh. He was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits and two walks (and, of course his teammates chipped in with three errors) in 1 2/3 innings before Gehr brought in Greg Blohowiak who finished the game,

Green Bay’s Rob Coe retired the first seven A’s to facelhim but an injury forced him out with one out in the third, The A;s took advantage of the situation and went on to score three runs in the third with Jordan Rennicke, Matt Schilter and Kreston Albright getting hits. Tim Patzman’s ground ball and Albright’s hit drove in the runs.

After that shaky start, Justin Novitzke settled in to hold the A’;s scoreless until the eighth when they got two runs on a couple errors and Brett CleveringA’s double.

Coe and Novitzke held the slumping A’s to just six hits.

Tyler Jones is scheduled to start for the A’s who are now 33-22 for the season.
