Schwarz No-Hitter Highlights A’s Double Win Over Addison

Posted: June 29, 2014

Ordinarily, Eric Schmitz’ 3-hit shutout would have been enough for a headline, but not this day.

Taylor Schwarz, who just turned 25, celebrated that birthday with a no hitter. Schwartz faced the minimum of 21 batters, but couldn’t get a perfect game out of it. One hitter got aboard on an error and Schwarz promptly picked him off. A hit-by-pitch got the other runner on base, but Schwarz’ infield turned a double play to erase him.

It was the 10th no-hitter in A’s history and the first since Mitch Gardner stopped the Manistee Saints without a hit on May 26, 2012.

The score of Schwarz’ perfecto was 2-0 with Harry Steldt scoring both runs after walking. Cole Heili had two hits for the A’s and Steldt a double in the game. Schwarz struck out eight in the 7-inning game.

Schmitz allowed only three harmless singles and struck out seven in the 5-inning game. The A’s took that game 10-0. Eric Solberg and Cole Miklavcic led the offense in that game. Solberg had a single, double and triple, and Cole. Sam Mattheis had a single and double and Pete Hofman a double.

The mound show took place in front of an enthusiastic crowd there to witness Don Diener’s induction into the Hall of Fame.

The first two shutout wins of the season put the A’s at 8-4 in the Wisconsin State League and 17-8 for the season.

The two teams meet again on Sunday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Sunday is Throwback Day with A’s players wearing a variety of uniforms from past years. Concessions prices will be rolled back as well. Selected A’s players will be available for photos and autographs after the game, which is one of the A’s $1 admission Sundays for Seniors and Students.
