Hanselman’s Fifth Inning Blast Powers A’s Past Legends

Posted: July 17, 2024

Tied 4-4 entering the bottom of the fifth, Chase Hanselman blasted a solo home run over the left field fence to lift the A’s over the Appleton Legends 5-4 as both teams try to catch Green Bay for the Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League championship.

The A’s now improve to 10-7 in NEWBL play with three games remaining. Green Bay, 12-5, sits two games ahead of the A’s. Green Bay and Sheboygan will meet tonight, but the game will only count towards the Wisconsin State League standings.

The A’s took an early lead in the bottom of the first with a RBI single by Sean Tillmon to left field that brought in Hanselman, who had reached on a triple. Appleton responded in the top of the second to tie the game 1-1.

As the teams continued to trade blows, Alex Perez drove in two runs with a single in the A’s half of the second, giving the A’s a 3-1 advantage.

Following a scoreless third, Appleton struck for three in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead over the A’s, but the A’s would tie things back up in the fourth on an RBI single by Ian Merry. Hanselman’s blast in the fifth would be the deciding run in the 5-4 victory.

Casey Stone earned the win for the A’s, his first, allowing just one hit and no runs over two innings of relief, striking out two. Noah Imrie, who started for the A’s, gave up four hits and four runs (three earned) over four innings while striking out five. Hunter Netzler pitched three shutout innings in relief to close out the game, striking out five without allowing a hit.
