A’s Split Opening Day; Advance to Play Ball Championship
Posted: May 21, 2022
The Sheboygan A’s kicked off the 2022 season Saturday, hosting pool play in the Play Ball Tournament.
After routing Manitowoc 10-0, the A’s fell 3-2 in the bottom half of the final inning to NEWBL-rival Appleton to finish pool play 1-1.
With all three teams going 1-1, the A’s won the tie-breaker based on the fewest runs allowed and will advance to the tournament’s championship Sunday in Branch against Ashwaubenon. Tournament officials notified the team that the game was being moved to Branch from Ashwaubenon late Saturday.
Eric Schmitz, Davis Wilson, and newcomer Blake Kunz combined to strike out 10 in six innings in game one, only allowing two hits.
Jacob Neese hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to put the A’s up early and they would not look back.
Neese would add a second home run in game two, followed immediately by Jacoby Endreas, adding a solo shot to bring the A’s back to even from down 2-0 late in their second game of the day, but it wasn’t enough as Appleton would score one in the bottom half to win the ballgame.
Sunday’s championship against Ashwaubenon will begin at 1 PM. The 2022 season is presented by Meijer.
