Dee’s Grand Slam Sets Early Tone as A’s Beat West Allis 10-7

The Sheboygan A’s needed a spark and a little redemption after a poor showing against Menasha Wednesday night. They got both in what turned out to be a white-knuckle 10-7 win over West Allis Thursday night.
The spark was Alex Dee’s grand slam home run that gave the A’s both the lead and momentum that carried through the night.
Lombard leads the league with a 17-2 record. After their 10-7 win over West Allis Thursday night, the A’s are 15-6 – three behind; West Allis is 15-9, (3½ back). The battle is not necessarily with Lombard because a full-fledge fold on their part is not going to happen. What is at stake is the top seed in the season endings state tournament qualifier.
There were some glitches in Thursday night’s game, but if you stack it against the Wednesday night effort, it was redemption.
And it started early. After two were out in the first inning Logan Vietmeier drove in a run and then Dee belted his grand slam. After that the A’s added runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings. Jake Falish’s recent hot stretch continued, with a solo home run.
Meanwhile, Drew Nuanes was pitching well. He got nicked up with some early runs and was uncharacteristically wild, but always worked out of the inning. After giving up two runs in the fourth, he settled in and recorded four 3-up, 3-down innings and left a 10-5 game to the bullpen which made it interesting in the ninth.
Elliott Danhoff was given the reigns in the ninth, but struggled with control, leaving the bases loaded with one out. Brad Rindfleisch was eventually called into the game and got the game-tying runs out for the save.
Now 25-14-1, the A’s are off Friday and resume Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Burlington. The 2019 season is presented by Meijer.
