Detert Named WSL’s MVP; Loomans Named Co-Most Valuable Pitcher
Posted: December 23, 2015
Sheboygan A’s outfielder Dylan Detert (UW-Milwaukee), who ranked
either first or second in eight offensive categories and finished third
in both slugging percentage and batting average, was named the Wisconsin
State Baseball League’s Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year.
Manager/Pitcher Derek Loomans, who led the league in earned run
average, was co-Most Valuable Pitcher with Matt Stari (Elgin Community
College) of Lombard.
And, for the 13th time, Lombard’s Jeff Vukovich was named Manager of the Year.
Detert hit .379 to rank third behind league batting champion Colin
Holderman (Southern Illinois University – .431) of Lombard and Addison’s
Mike Vilardo, (Purdue University – .392. The league managers, whose
votes decided the honors, likely considered that Detert played in 22
games, while Holderman and Vilardo played in just 16 games.
Detert led the league in runs scored, 24; hits, 33; triples, 3; and
total bases, 49. He was second to teammate Wyatt Olson (Indian Hills
Community College) in plate appearances, 99-98; and at bats, 92-87;
second to teammate Taylor Grimm (Lewis College) in runs batted in,
20-18; and to Kenosha’s Kyle Jones (UW-Whitewater) in doubles, 10-7. He
was third in slugging percentage with Vilardo’s .765 and Holderman’s
.686 beating out his .564.
Detert was a wrestling and baseball star at Wausau West High School
and went to Madison College where he hit .349 in his sophomore season
before transferring to UW-Milwaukee. The outfielder is a redshirt junior
this year. Overall, Detert hit.316 in 40 games this summer with 11
doubles, four triples, two home runs and 26 runs batted in.
In sharing the pitching honor, Loomans went 3-1 with a league-leading
1.61 earned run average in 28 innings. Stari was 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA in
21 innings.
Loomans, who doubles as the Sheboygan A’s Manager led the A’s to a
second place finish at 17-6 and was runner-up to Vukovich in Manager of
the Year voting. Loomans took the A’s reins a week into the season after
Chad Langley had to step down due to a rule having to do with a college
coach’s off-season contact with his players. Loomans’ A’s were 33-18
this summer.
Vukovich, the Orioles only manager since they entered the league in
1992, has won 18 pennants in that time, including the last 11 straight
years.
Detert, Grimm and Cole Miklavcic (Marian University), were elected to
the first all-league team. Harry Steldt, Carter Amundsen (Augustana
College) and Brandon Winfied made the second.
The State League team and individual awards will be presented at the
league’s annual Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner to be held at Blue Harbor
