Schwarz Stops A’s Skid With 18-Strikeout Shutout

Posted: June 12, 2013

Taylor Schwarz answered the call in a big way Monday night.

Schwarz took the ball and stopped a 3-game A’s losing streak with a 18-strikeout, 6-hit shutout victory over the Oshkosh Giants. The final score at Wildwood Park was 6-0 on Sponsor’s Night.

The 18 strikeouts ties Schwarz with Dave Mertzig for fifth place on the single game strikeouts list. The record is 21 set by Mark Simon in 1965.

Schwarz was masterful. After giving up four hits in the first two innings, only an error and a passed ball kept him from perfection as 18 giants in a row went down in the middle innings.

The A’s scored four runs in the first two innings with Chad Langley’s two-run double the big blow. The A’s coasted home from there. Langley knocked in another run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Jeremy McCarty, Luke Maldonado and Dan Barwick all had two hits.

The A’s travel to Kenosha Thursday and then return home Friday night to meet Genoa City and Lombard over the weekend.

The win evens the A’s record at 3-3 in the Northeastern Wisconsin League and 1-0 in the Wisconsin State League.
