A’s post win in knotted Northeastern Wisconsin League
Posted: July 19, 2012
As the playoffs approach, only one-half game separates the top four teams in the Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League.
The Sheboygan A’s posted a 5-4 win over the Appleton Legends on Wednesday night, while the Oshkosh Giants were defeating the Green Bay Storm, 6-3. Those results leave the standings as follows:
Menasha 8-5
Oshkosh 7-5
Green Bay 8-6
Sheboygan 9-7
Manitowoc 5-9
Appleton 5-10
The top four teams make the playoffs.
Tonight Menasha is at Green Bay and Oshkosh is at Sheboygan. The game in Sheboygan gets under way at 7:30 p.m. Tonight is Knights of Columbus Night at Wildwood.
A spirited crowd of Thrivent and Southside Parish fans helped the A’s to their win.
Appleton took a 2-0 lead in the first, but a walk and consecutive hits by Trevor Theissen, Harry Steldt and Chad Langley and an RBI ground out by Justin Hunt paced the A’s to a 4-run third inning. Appleton closed in to 4-3 and then tied it at four before three straight bunt singles by Grant Evans, Sam Raff and Dan Salzbrenner loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Evans scored what would be the game-winning run on Alex Jaskulski’s fielder’s choice.
Taylor Schwarz pitched seven strong innings to earn the win. He struck out eight. Derek Loomis pitched the eighth for a hold and Brandon Winfield pitched a pressure-packed ninth for the save. After Winfield got the first two outs in the ninth, a double, hit batsman and walk loaded the bases before Winfield got Chase Eagan to hit a bouncer to Sam Raff who threw over for the final out.
