A’s Can’t Climb Out of Early Hole in Loss to Burlington
Posted: June 17, 2022
The A’s fell behind early Thursday night and couldn’t fully erase the deficit as the Burlington Barons took the game by a 7-3 score.
The loss once again puts the A’s back at the .500 mark for the season with a 10-10 record and keeps them near the basement of the Wisconsin State League standings at 3-8.
Sam Hernandez made his first start of the season for the A’s, and rust certainly played a factor as the UW-Platteville starter allowed the first five runners to reach base and seven of the first eight. After getting out of the inning, Blake Kunz came in and also struggled a bit before settling in. Kunz would eventually go six innings, striking out 12. Mac Doherty pitched two scoreless innings of relief to close things out.
Offensively for the A’s, it was a struggle. Baron’s pitching struck out 19 hitters and scattered six hits. The Barons’ defense committed five errors which led to the A’s getting a few extra chances. Brady Zackrison’s eighth-inning double accounted for the A’s only extra-base hit.
The A’s will take Friday off before starting a home-and-home doubleheader weekend with the Kenosha Kings. The A’s will be at Simmons Field in Kenosha Saturday for a 3 PM doubleheader before coming home Sunday for a 1 PM doubleheader. Sunday is another Meijer Family Day – kids ages 12 and under get in free to the game. Player autographs will be available and kids can run the bases at the end of the doubleheader. The Kindred Heart Families Donation Drive will also take place Sunday, where fans can get a free general admission ticket to the game with a donation of a new pair of kids’ socks or underwear.
