Lombard Takes Weekend Series
Posted: June 16, 2014
The Lombard Orioles took three of four games from the Sheboygan A’s over the weekend to dampen but not douse hopes the Sheboygan A’s might have had for contending for a Wisconsin State League title this season. Lombard took Saturday’s games 4-0 on a no-hitter by University of Illinois pitcher Andrew Mamlik and 3-1.
On Sunday Lombard took a 10-3 win, but in the second game the A’s did something they had not done in the last 13 meetings against the Orioles dating back to 1911, they won the game, 14-9, coming from behind with a 6-run 6th inning.
The club returns to action Tuesday night with a 7:30 p.m. Northeastern Wisconsin League against the Green Bay Storm. Tuesday is 8th St. Ale Haus’ Craft Beer Night. A summary of the weekend activity follows.
Saturday Game 1 (Lombard 4-0) Andrew Mamlik threw a no-hitter at the A’s. Only Jordan DeBoer’s third inning walk came between Mamlik and a perfect game. Lombard took a 1-0 lead in the fourth and scored three in the sixth to ice it. Derek Loomans took the loss.
Saturday Game 2 (Lombard 3-1) The A’s tied this game at one in the third inning when Eric Solberg drove in a run with the second of his game-high three hits. Lombard got two in the fifth for the win. Brandon Winfield was the hard-luck loser.
Sunday Game 1 (Lombard10-3) Lombard scored four runs in the fourth inning to put this game out of reach. Colin Willis had two hits for the A’s including a 2-run home run.
Sunday Game 2 (Sheboygan 14-9) Lombard scored three runs in the first inning, but the A‘s bounced back to take an 8-5 lead after four innings, Lombard battled back to jump ahead 9-8, but again the A’s came back, this time with a 6-run eighth inning to give them their first win over Lombard since 2011. Solberg was 3-for-4 with a single, double and home run; Blake Fleischman and Cole Heili both had a single and double, Jake Perez two base hits and a home run and Tyler Agard two hits.
The weekend results left the A’s with a 5-4 State League record and a 10-6 overall mark.
