A’s, Cavs split Saturday DH

The Sheboygan A’s and Eau Claire Cavaliers locked horns in what turned out to be a dramatic day of Wisconsin State League baseball at Wildwood Park Saturday.

Eau Claire won the first game in extra innings, 2-0; the A’s held on to win the second, 5-4.

Trevor Nicholson and Davis Larsen hooked up in a 0-0 battle for seven innings. It got broken up in the extra eighth inning when Brian Burman decided it with a 2-run home run. The A’s managed only three hits (two by Cole Heili) off Davis. Nicholson scattered seven.

Big hits by Jeremy McCarty, San Matthies and Trevor Theissen sparked the A’s to a 5-0 lead in game two as A’s starter Taylor Schwarz was working on a 1-hit shutout through five innings. In the sixth Eau Claire scored one and added three more in the seventh when after a bad-hop hit was followed by another hit and then a throwing error the Cavs had the tying run at second with only one out.

Then Schwarz got serious and struck out the last two hitters of the game to save the win. Theissen and Matthies both had a single and double to lead the A’s at the plate.

The two teams meet again on Sunday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
