“It isn’t about how you start, it’s about …”
The Sheboygan A’s got off to a horrendous start Thursday night, but inspired by the gutty pitching performance of Cody Griebling battled back, got some rare 2-out hits, and came away from Wildwood Baseball Park with a 9-4 win over the Northeastern Wisconsin League leading Oshkosh Giants.
The A’s committed three errors in the first inning and Oshkosh had a 3-0 lead before the Meals on Wheels volunteers had found their seats.
But Griebling and his A’s didn’t quit. They got one in the second on doubles by Justin Hunt and Alex Jaskulski and tied it at three in the fifth when Sam Raff singled, Sam Matthies doubled him in and eventually scored on Trevor Theissen’s infield out.
The Giants regained the lead with a run in the sixth, but then came the A’s half of the sixth.
It started innocently enough as Tim Patzman and Drew Pearson flied out.
Then Hunt belted a long double and Chad Langley walked. Here Jaskulski delivered a double to knock them both in. After that, Sam Raff got hit by a pitch and Matthies walked to load the bases. Theissen got his second RBI of the game with a base hit and then Grant Evans cleared the bases with another 2-out double.
It was 9-4 after the big 2-out, 6-run rally.
Griebling went the distance, scattering eight hits and striking out seven.
Jaskulski drove in three runs with two doubles and a single and Hunt had a pair of doubles to lead the offense.
The win puts the A’s at 6-5 in the Northeastern League, one game behind Oshkosh, and 14-12 for the season.
Tonight is Fish Fryday night at the park when the A’s take on Racine at 7:30. Certificates for fish fries will be given away throughout the night.
