Posted: May 31, 2012

The Sheboygan A’s overcame a 15-strikeout performance by the Menasha MACs with a shutout performance of their own and snatched a 3-0 Northeastern Wisconsin League season opening victory at Wildwood Park Wednesday night.

The win puts the A’s a 4-0 for the season as they prepare for their Langsdorf League opener Saturday against the West Allis Nationals. The twi-night affair gets under way a 5 p.m.

Saturday will be a big day at the ballpark. It begins at 1 p.m. with an afternoon tailgate party that will by highlighted by a 1:30 p.m. Pat McCurdy show. McCurdy, a comic songwriter-singer, will perform until the main event of the afternoon, the Legend Larry’s Chicken Wing Eating Contest, gets under way at 3:30 p.m. There is no charge for the afternoon festivities.

Jake Herman, the Macs starter, who does his college pitching at Northern Illinois, went the first seven for the MACs and with scouts looking on, fanned 13.

But when the A’s weren’t getting rung up, they were collecting base hits.

The club racked up 14 hits, but left 14 on base.

Meanwhile, A’s pitchers Ben Stanczyk and Brandon Winfield were shutting out the Macs on just five hits. Stanczyk went the first five to earn the win; Winfield was perfect in the final four allowing only two base-runners, both on errors.

The A’s scored in the third when Trevor Theissen doubled, Tim Patzman singled and Harry Stedt delivered the run with the inning’s third hit. They added another run in the fifth on Drew Pearson’s triple and Sam Matthies’ RBI single. They made it 3-0 in the sixth when Theissen led off with his second double of the game, and scored on consecutive hits by Jon Capasso and Steldt.

Patzman and Steldt had three hits for the A’s and Theissen and Pearson each had a pair.
